You may have found recently that you are unable to view tables in your existing Microsoft Word documents. If you have recently applied Windows updates this is likely the caused.

With the August 8, 2017, update for Word 2016 (KB3213656) or September 5, 2017, update for Word 2016 (KB4011039) you may experience the following issues:

  • If you merge vertical cells in a table, the cell content disappears, and you can’t select the merged cell.
  • If you open an existing document that has a table with merged cells, the cells are displayed as blank.

If you have a Click-to-Run edition of Office this does not apply to you.

As a workaround you can un-install this update:

Windows 10

  1. Go to Start, enter View Installed Updates in the Search Windows box, and then press Enter.
  2. In the list of updates, locate and select KB3213656 or KB4011039, and then select Uninstall.

You can also un-install the update via command line:  wusa /uninstall /kb:3213656 or wusa /uninstall /kb:4011039
